40 Things I’ve Learned Before 40...(and a few extra ;)
In honor of turning 40 this week, I wanted to share a few things I’ve learned along the way — from years behind the chair as a stylist, starting Bella Hue during the height of COVID, motherhood, clean swaps, beauty lessons, and honestly… just life.
Some are helpful. Some are random. Some are funny. All of them feel like little lessons I’ve picked up along the way.
- Dry shampoo day one hair.
- Shampoo the roots. Condition the ends.
- Silk over satin.
- You don’t need dryer sheets.
- Stop over drying your laundry.
- Most people don’t need haircuts every 6 weeks.
- Don’t wash your hair after color for 72 hours.
- Feeling anxious? Drink water first.
- Wine helps you fall asleep… but wakes you back up.
- Nothing beats 100% cotton sheets.
- Audiobooks still count as reading.
- Three dogs feels like a lot… but they make me happy.
- The order you apply skincare matters.
- Vinegar + water + essential oils = the best all-purpose cleaner.
- Hard water can ruin your hair.
- Always pre-rinse your hair before swimming.
- Sulfates shouldn’t be in shampoo.
- Never go to bed with wet hair.
- Most itchy scalps are caused by yeast overgrowth.
- Less products = more volume.
- Middle parts aren’t for everyone.
- Your hair is often the first sign something is off internally.
- Never ignore excessive shedding.
- Silicone only hides the real problem.
- A nightly bath is always worth it.
- If you’re gonna swap one thing… make it clean laundry detergent.
- Good non-toxic makeup is hard to find… but it exists.
- Don’t force someone to be crunchy. Just show them the difference.
- It’s okay to start over.
- Wind damage is one of the worst things for your hair.
- Always apply dry shampoo before a hat.
- Swap your pillowcase more often during allergy season.
- Elderberry really can help with allergies.
- Invest in a good air fryer.
- Store deli meat in glass containers with wax paper.
- Keep a mental health journal before blaming yourself.
- Think twice before implants.
- Water-based products hydrate. Oil-based products lock it in.
- Grounding is free.
- Self-care isn’t selfish.
- The best gift I ever got was a robot vacuum/mop.
- Dry lips? Drink water.
- Pre-oil before color treatments.
- It’s okay to ask your stylist not to overlap bleach.
- Frizzy hair usually means natural wave.
- Rinsing with cold water actually works.
- Shampoo your roots twice.
- Saunas are the best place for hair masks.
- The best time to tweeze is after a hot shower.
- Body oil is underrated.
Looking back, so much of what I’ve learned comes back to the same thing: simple swaps matter, what we use every day matters, and taking care of yourself doesn’t have to be complicated.
Thank you for being here and growing with Bella Hue through all the coffee, late nights, learning curves, product launches, and little behind-the-scenes moments. I’m so grateful for this community.
